One of my goodie-bag treats from New York fashion week was Cutler Specialist Volumizing Spray ($21). The alcohol-free spray promises to add volume without adding tackiness. I was excited to try it because, well, if it’s used on models backstage, it must be good, right?

I spritzed this spray on my damp hair and decided to let it air-dry. I have to say, it does indeed add volume. Even without blow-drying, my hair had movement and bounce rather than sticking to my head. That’s the good news. The bad news is that my hair felt like straw. I may have over-spritzed, but still, my hair was coated with product, which kept it from feeling as soft as it normally does.

It’s easy to see why this spray is used for fashion shows: It volumizes and adds a very slight amount of hold. For an event such as a wedding, this stuff would be great to have on hand—but for everyday use, it’s just too much for me.
